At PGA Championship, after two days, it's still Xander Schauffele in the lead – by a nose

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – When Xander Schauffele reached the media tent for his post-round press conference Friday evening, the podium was still occupied.
So he took a seat and listened. Tiger Woods has that effect on people.
When Woods, who’ll miss the cut at the 2024 PGA Championship with a two-round score of 7-over-par, exited the room and the tournament, he patted Schauffele on the back, offering quick encouragement.
We’ll see what kind of effect that might have on Schauffele.
On Friday night, as on Thursday night, Schauffele goes to sleep with the lead in a major championship – and he has yet to win one of those.
SCHAUFFELE:Off to historic start at PGA Championship. Can he finally seal the deal?
It’s close, though.
Schauffele followed up his first-round 62 with a second-round 68, keeping a one-shot lead over Collin Morikawa, who’s at 11 under. Sahith Theegala (10 under) is third.
Other big names – Scottie Scheffler (9 under), Bryson DeChambeau (9 under), Tony Finau (8 under), Viktor Hovland (8 under), Hideki Matsuyama (7 under) and Brooks Koepka (7 under) – are all within shouting distance of the 12 under Schauffele brings into Saturday’s third round.
SCHEFFLER:Was in shock after arrest at PGA Championship. He wasn't alone.
Schauffele downplayed his Thursday round with the media, a nod to his lack of success closing the deal after fast starts, and then did the same Friday with a grin.
“Hey guys, it's just been two rounds,” he said. “It's just 36 holes. It's a really good start to the tournament. I'm playing some really nice golf, and that's kind of it.”
The positive vibes surrounding Schauffele contrasted with those of Woods, who shot a 77 on Friday, including a pair of triple bogeys on the front nine.
“I need to play more,” Woods said. “Unfortunately, I just haven't played a whole lot of tournaments, and not a whole lot of tournaments on my schedule, either. Hopefully, everything will somehow come together in my practice sessions at home, and (I’ll) be ready for (the U.S. Open at) Pinehurst.”
Friday’s second round – which was delayed an hour and 20 minutes in the morning – was halted by darkness with a small number of golfers yet to finish.
The projected cut is 1 under. Per a stat sent out by the PGA, only two major championships – both Open Championships (1990 at St. Andrews and 2006 at Royal Liverpool) – have had a cut below par.
